I don’t know about anyone else, but I know I always have a lot of projects being worked on, hidden away, and in the planning and/or designing stages at any given time. Which usually means some things fall by the wayside. Maybe it’s spending time with family or friends, or maybe I sleep less one night. But, sometimes, the need to focus on just one thing pushes through and everything else, aside from necessities like work, food, sleep, and the occasional get-together with friends. This is the boat I have been in for the past few weeks.

It first started when I got sick, mostly just a cold that left me feeling miserable, but even after getting better, I had no motivation for much of anything with the exception of one crochet project – a Hocus Pocus-themed granny square blanket – which still has elements I need to figure out. So I focused on what I could do, but the monotony of the project still got to me at times, wanting to crochet other things but without the ability to choose a project to work on despite the number of patterns available to me.

What do you do in situations like these?

For me, I gave it time. After realizing things weren’t going to change exactly when I wanted them to, I told myself to do whatever I felt comfortable with and allowed myself the grace to let certain things (like my Instagram page) mostly sit.

And, it worked.

After some time spent working on more granny squares, binging episodes of Golden Girls, writing for pleasure, and seeing Frozen on Broadway with friends, this past weekend I finally felt motivated to work on other projects. I finished crocheting two which I need to add embellishments to, and am just three rows away from finishing another. I have also picked up a design I had started creating this summer and am reworking it so hopefully it will work out to look and fit exactly as I had envisioned it.

Sometimes you simply need to allow yourself to take a break, even when the world around you doesn’t seem to want you to stop.
