Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of yarn do you use and why?
I mostly use less expensive yarns I can buy at any craft store because it is in my price range and allows me to buy in bulk – plus there are always amazing sales to shop! However, I have recently developed a weakness for indie dyed yarns, though due to their one of a kind nature and price, I always need to find the perfect project before I can use them.

Do you have a favorite brand or kind of yarn?
Not really, I have a tendency to mix and match my yarns within the same weight class and material content – especially when making amigurumi. Though sometimes when I make the dolls based on the patterns in the book AmiguruMe by Allison Hoffman, I do also mix different weights and materials on occasion. However, I also feel like Lion Brand Yarns will always remain one of my preferred brands as they produce the first yarn I ever crocheted with – Vanna’s Choice in Pea Green – and I live close to the Lion Brand Yarn Outlet (which can be both a blessing and a curse).

What is your favorite item you have made?
My favorite almost always tends to be my most recent make, however my set of five Joan of Arc dolls remains very close to my heart for many reasons. This includes the fact it was the first time I was making more than one doll of the same person/character and needed to make that clear in their heights, facial expressions, hairstyles, etc.

How do you hold your crochet hook?
I use the knife grip. I find it to be really comfortable and it gives me greater control, especially when I need to crochet tightly.

Do you have a favorite crochet hook style or size?
Nope! You hand me any hook, whether it is inline or tapered, metal, plastic, or wood, Boye, Bates, or Clover, etc., and I will use it! I have found, however, that even though sizes are supposed to be standard, ie all G-7 hooks are supposed to be 4.00mm, they aren’t always the same across brands in millimeters, so I do always make sure to double check every aspect of a hook’s size before using it or including it in my project notes. In terms of favorite size, I am very used to working with an E-4 3.50mm hook for my amigurumi. The smallest hook size I have ever used is a 1.50mm and the largest is a P/Q-19 15.00mm, so I use a wide range of sizes.
